Teki has more than fifteen (15) years’ experience as an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) lawyer. She is a privacy and data protection consultant and leads the firm’s ICT Law team. Teki is a member of the Ghana Bar Association and the International Bar Association.
Between 2008 and 2014, Teki worked as an ICT Legal Expert in the Ministry of Communications under the World Bank e-Ghana Project. Her dedication and commitment led to the development of several draft laws (including the Broadcasting Bill) and passage of eleven (11) key legislations for the ICT sector in Ghana between 2008 and 2012. These legislations include the National Communications Authority Act, 2008 (Act 769), the National Information Technology Agency Act, 2008 (Act 771), the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772), the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1994), Subscriber Identity Module Registration Regulations, 2011 (L.I.2006) and the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843). She also worked in various capacities on the development of Ghana’s e-Government infrastructure, e-Justice system, electronic registration of companies and e-Immigration system, etc.
She has extensive knowledge on ICT policy, law and compliance. She has taught various informative seminars on E-banking, ICT &Telecom Law, Privacy/Data Protection, Cybersecurity, etc. She was also the Secretary to the Ministerial Advisory Board of the Ministry of Communications in 2009 and a Board Member of the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission from 2010 to 2017. Teki was the first Executive Director to set up the Data Protection Commission of Ghana and facilitate implementation of Ghana’s Data Protection Act until her exit in July 2017.
She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Africa Digital Rights Hub (a not-for-profit think tank that promotes digital rights across Africa), a member of the UN Global Pulse Privacy Advisory Group and a non-resident fellow at the Center for Global Development (CGD) in Washington DC. She was also appointed the Co-Chair of the Common Thread Network a network of Commonwealth data protection authorities in July 2017 and was a member of the advisory committee for the 40th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners in 2018. She was a member of the UN Special Rapporteur on Privacy (UN SRP) Task Force on Privacy and Medical Data; is the Publications and Africa Liaison Officer for the International Bar Association’s Communications Law Committee and sits on serval other international bodies.
She has also spoken on various international fora including 2019 Global Privacy Summit, EU Cyber Forum, 2019 Commonwealth Law Conference, International Bar Association’s Annual Conference, the 2018 Mobile World Congress, the 38th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, Internet Freedom Forum, Ghana Bar Association’s Annual Conference & Continuing Legal Education, the African School on Internet Governance and has published and contributed to the publication of various reports and articles on ICT Law in Africa.
Teki holds an LLM in Information Technology and Telecommunications Law from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow – Scotland and a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Political Science from the University of Ghana (Legon), Accra – Ghana.
